The Writer’s Workshop

I chose number 5😳

I have a bad habit of speaking out, possibly blurting out the first thought of my mind. And of course I do have a temper. Case in point – I was in the lobby sitting at the table when another resident decided that I and my two friends did not belong. Truth be told we did not belong, however, we did not know that at the time. Suddenly this woman stood up in front of her four family guests and yelled at us to get out, we did not belong. She waived her fingers like we were vermin and said, I reserved this whole area, so I would not have to listen to your big, fat mouth pointing to my friend across the table from me. To say the least I was shocked. And I like my friend and our other friend, were playing cards quietly and not disturbing. Our other friend was an 83 year old woman . who was leaving the next day for an assisted living place. Since I was shocked, I yelled back at her. (You do not have the right to speak to anyone like that.) My friend, who was the subject of the attack looked at me, lowered her head and muttered, no, don’t say anything. Since this episode, I have gotten dirty looks from this woman, didn’t even know her name at the time. I am avoiding her and her scalding mouth as much as possible. So this is life in an apartment complex for people 55 and over. So if you live in your own home, appreciate it and enjoy yourself.

Fandango’s Story Starter

This week’s Story Starter teaser is:

On his way back from the restroom, Vernon regrettably opened the wrong door. So this is where they’ve been keeping it!  I knew there was something weird somewhere in the office but right here, no locks? Then he was surprised to see Mary, his coworker working on it. “What’s going on in here?” he asked.

“What? What are you doing in here? This is supposed to be a secret!”

“What secret, what are you doing?”

Mary quickly stepped in front of the box. “You’re not supposed to be in here”, she said.  Try as she might she could not completely hide the surprise. Mary and the rest of the office were making a new desktop to replace the ancient one Vernon used every day.  His birthday was coming up and everyone chipped in.  Vernon suddenly realized what it was, apologized and left the room, but he couldn’t help that big smile on his face.

The Sunday Whirl

***

The figure of a woman is dressed in frayed tattered clothes, her belongings all tethered to her body as she walks down the sidewalk. She passes by a small restaurant, decorated by a flower garden near the door, and can’t help but hunger for the foods she smells. Until the spirits decide this phase of her history will pass, she will salvage another year of wandering, and her stories will be just this—existing, surviving, dreaming of a better life she hopes comes soon.

“Remember, you can’t cheat! You must join in. This is pretend you are a toy and think what you could be doing as that toy. The teacher anticipated a quick spurt of activity as she tried to push their imagination. One child started jumping up and down with a big grin on his face, saying, “I’m a spring!” Then others copied him and it became a trend of jumpers. A quiet little girl was hiding under her desk pretending she was a cat licking her paws. The principal stopped by the classroom and then just said, “carry on”, shaking his head.

At first he was all scwiggles and smiles. We sat in the meet booth and he just couldn’t sit still, his little body twisting and turning. My two companions were in love immediately, and so was I. He grew to be a soft hearted silky furred friend we named Hulk. A huge black sweetheart was my shadow who thought he was still puppy sized when he would jump into my lap. I miss him.

“Look over there, did you see that?” Joe pointed at the shooting star. “Quick, make a wish, hurry, because this night will end and you’ll miss it!” Joe was a dreamer, one of the soft hearted young men that are in the shadows these days. He was intelligent, quiet and still believed in wonder.

Mariah looked, but she missed it. She cuddled up next to Joe thinking how sweet he was. He was a rare find, always paid attention to what she had to say with interest, and had a genuine personality. Joe was almost childlike, with a huge imagination. It was if he was sitting on a rainbow, and he could look down and see all the good things that happen, not concentrating on the sadness Mariah saw every day. She was a social worker and it was a relief to spend time with Joe after her work day was over.

“Don’t worry”, Joe offered. “I’m certain there will be another one coming.” He gave Mariah a quick kiss and shifted closer.

“Everything’s better with butter” I have to agree
It’s fat of course, with bread or potatoes, a treat
Then there’s avocado, a more healthy choice
But fats in general should not be rejoiced
Veggies themselves are good for your tummy
But with butter? Yummy!
