2022 November PAD Chapbook Challenge 17

Prompt: Write a risk poem

Surprise Package

Shall I open it

Tear the seal

Wondering

What will be revealed

A box of cups

A frightened kitty

A biography of Walter Mitty

I take the risk, open the paper

Revealing a foul scented vapor

Further into the mysterious box

I find a pair of old soccer socks!

It’s a Blitz!

Write a “blitz” poem that includes something about a mouse or mice. This form of poetry is a stream of short phrases and images with repetition and rapid flow

House Mice

mice hide

mice are clever

clever in homes

clever scavenging

scavenging crumbs

scavenging bits

bits of bread

bits of food

food spilled

food dropped

dropped and spied

dropped unaware

unaware they’re feeding mice

unaware of dropped enjoyment

enjoyment of a tiny mouse

enjoyment brought in tiny house

house in a wall

house hidden from cats

cats smell and sniff

cats only sneaking

sneaking is the mouse forte

sneaking silently every day

day turns to night

day isn’t his best

best to be hidden in the dark

best without candle scent

scent of savory

scent of sweet

sweet treat favorites

sweet crumbs he savors

savors flavors

savors sugar

sugar plums entice

sugar powdered delight

delight in all

delights inside cubby

cubby holes

cubby comfort

comfort and safety

comfort and rest

rest is not his job

rest doesn’t fill cheeks

cheeks furry

cheeks empty

empty shelves

empty floors

floors clean

empty

OOPS!

ANTHONY ADVISED HER TO FORGET WHAT HAD HAPPENED AND WARNED HER TO NOT SAY ANYTHING TO ANYONE. He hastily pulled the skirt back up and made sure the hem was not showing anymore. He knew she was a good friend but he never told her that women’s clothing made him feel more like a man. It was his little secret and harmed no one.

Simply Six Minutes

“Yup, the whole building came relatively cheap in today’s market. I couldn’t resist it, really, Fred. Of course there are a few problems but what place doesn’t?” Joe chuckled rather nervously. Fred just looked back at him, the building, and then back at Joe.

“You could say that, Fred. And you think you can make apartments or just rent out the entire space?” Joe looked again at the two weird doors.

“Well you haven’t been inside yet Joe, come on in.” After getting a tall ladder and entering the lower door, Joe observed a number of very tall men donning colorful costumes. Joe guessed they were parade performers. “There’s a place for everything.”

Moving Furniture?

Hearing incessant heavy rolling

Wondering if that sleepless trolling

Makes me an ungrateful shrew

Not knowing what trauma his being drew

Possibly it’s a heavy chair

Marking its path in my upstairs

I should ignore and be contrite

But my lack of sleep does indict

The actions of the dweller above

Constant noise does not induce love.

SYW 11-14-22

1. Does the weather affect your mood? Yes. If it’s sunny I’m happier and cloudy or dark I keep to myself.

2. If a stranger smiles at you or says ‘good morning’ when they pass you in the street, do you return it? Always and I even initiate it.

3. If you had a choice of just one of these things to eat, what would it be and why?
Chocolate, a sweet pastry, a plate of chips/fries (this is not a forever choice, just one instance). I’d choose probably fries 🙄

4. If you could go back to when you were a specific age, what would that be? Why? Don’t think I would, unless maybe thirty before my mom died.

Gratitude: You know my answer—family. Surprise calls asking: are you decent and my answer: never, before they come knocking 😂

Garden Show

Just like clockwork, the head garden club fairy looked sideways at my peppermint camellias. Her lack of charm powered over me. Mingling among the chummy chaos of my regular admirers who looked like mice admiring the latest soft cheese, she chose juxtaposition, putting herself between them and me. The rest of the crowd oohing and ahhing at my offerings decided to give her a wide berth when her glowering look called dibs over their presence. Once again her interference and influence caused me to lose the trophy and shatter my efforts.
