The Unicorn Challenge

The first time she saw him on the screen her heart melted, and it never occurred he was not what he seemed. She needed a job, that was clear, and this office was conveniently near. She filled out the forms and applied on the spot and heard right away, but was excited and thought, maybe this is the one time I will have a good outcome. He looks very nice, and it would provide a good income. That afternoon, she dressed in a hurry, looked in the mirror didn’t see anything to cause worry. Her suit was pressed, she looked efficient, was on her way, to finally be proficient. Her appointment was close, right down the street and he seemed anxious to meet. She walked in the door of the coffee shop, spotted him immediately and practically hopped over to the booth where he was sitting, carefully slipping into it, nicely fitting. She noticed he had a weird smile on his face, an odd one considering this was a public place. Suddenly she felt a hand on her knee. Recoiling, sat up straight and thought she should flee. The hand traveled further than it should, and she knew he was up to no good. Suddenly was out of the booth, deciding she wanted nothing to do with a man so uncouth. Getting out to the sidewalk she bumped into a lady, promptly fell into the street and lost her shoe in the grating.

Jimmy

His head had always been lumpy

His attitude definitely slumpy

His body always bumping

Eyebrows always jumping

His eyes never seemed aligned

I fear his looks were maligned

He couldn’t help how he was born

Parents always seemed forlorn

Jimmy was the brunt of jokes

Even offered by his folks

Jimmy was a sad man

Decided to live in his van

A few people with whom he ran

Decided they’d be Jimmy’s fans

From then on Jimmy’s life took a turn

People changed and even learned

Jimmy was an odd one, yes

But as a friend indeed, the best.

The most humid place I ever lived until eighteen was Vermont. Later on when visiting my folks there, their tiny bathroom with a shower was practically useless. Keyword: towels! Getting out of the shower you could dry off but it did not last; no air conditioners those years and you came out as wet and hot as you went in. Then at nineteen I moved to Houston, TX and as Fandango’s already stated, it was hotter and more humid than VT! The only tolerable outside patio times were late fall. Going to work, you melted on the car seat and the car’s air conditioner never got cool. So it was the unpleasant days of pantyhose and non cotton fabrics that made it really tolerable—not! Does anyone use the —not phrase anymore? Well you can tell by my words above it was the sixties and seventies era.
