Joe wondered if the town’s curse still existed or was it lost as hoped. It had been true enough years ago when he heard the screams of the mothers, the sighs of the fathers, and police sirens. It seemed even the smallest children could slip through the doors beneath the iron bridge where terrible things happened. As usual, newspapers centered on the parent’s behavior, knocking down any family that might be involved. Joe sat quietly in the old diner, watching children play near the tracks, saddened to think most things don’t change.

I really liked the atmosphere you built around Joe sitting there, observing everything and feeling that sense of things not really changing. Very thought-provoking piece.
