They used to call him Honest John
A name rarely used for such a con
Artist usually accompanies that
But I’d have to eat my hat!
John was basically a good guy
Years turned him, don’t know why
I think it was the war.

Honest John was a young recruit
Loved wearing the Army suit
He traveled over to Vietnam
And there he lost his mind – I am
A friend and fellow soldier true
But the rainy swamp made us blue
And mostly it was war.
