Walking in snow hidden
slippery black ice
Snow melts into mush, travel is dangerous
Rain constant so planting delayed or
uprooted plants sit in a flooded garden
Snow covers the plantings
Tree limbs full of buds
while lilies bloom, hyacinths and
red paintbrush make flag scenery complete
Bright flowers appear, warmed soil eager, refreshed
Sun’s heat helps growth for garden yield
Frost curled leaves, their colors faded
Chilled flowers remain
A few broken stems triumphant but sleet is too powerful
not giving in to the cold
while winds still freezing start the cycle again where I’m walking.

Cheryl, I’m drawn to the quiet persistence of the plants—and of you—through the shifting, stubborn weather.
