The Sunday Whirl

***

The catastrophe started from a gift of apples, which she had been craving for over a week. The apples came in a box with instructions written on the top. You could only open the latch if you would sing a special song she learned as a child. It caused a sort of enchantment. There was no limit to her imagination, and she did miss the song. If she was chattering too much, her mother would sing this song and interrupt her. And some of the time that’s exactly what she wanted—for her mother to sing so she would chatter just to make this happen. The song was a sort of catalyst transporting the girl on wings to stretch her imagination. Her mother knew this would happen and on different days to see what her daughter would come up with, it might be a happy or a sad song.

Now grown, apparently her mother sent the box with the saddest song of all inside, her farewell. The young woman unlocked the box to hear her mother’s very last song, and collapsed. The neighbors heard her scream and came in to find the young woman on the floor surrounded by apples.
