The Writer’s Workshop

I choose number six because I haven’t thought about this for a long time! We were in Glenwood Springs, Colorado with a neighbor and her family. We went river rafting. Unfortunately our raft’s guide/driver was inexperienced. My youngest went into the neighbor’s boat because she was heavier and we thought my daughter would do well being anchored in the center of that raft with her.

My husband and I and our boys were in another raft. The guide went over rapids and we were all sitting on the edges, paddling. My husband popped off first, me second and the boys scrambled into the center and stayed in the raft. They had given us instructions in case we fell out. I saw my husband rapidly heading towards a river pylon and hit it. I was trying to get to the side as we were told and trying to avoid this huge rock. I hit the rock, broke my glasses but drifted further and finally got to calmer water and shore. Of course it was the wrong side. A more experienced raft guide jumped in to the calmer water there and took me over to the other side. If I ever go rafting again, which is unlikely, I’ll check on the guide’s experience. Needless to say we were soaked!
