Spring Sea

This week, write the haikai poem of your choice (haiku, senryu, tanka, kyoka, haibun, haiga, renga, etc.) that alludes to spring sea (haru no umi).

muted offering
spring sea hues seeming lighter
summer brights waiting
warming ocean waters here
all anxious for summer sun

  1. I see the spring sea
    Now a distant memory
    It’s summer for me
    Here, I clearly fear
    In my chosen hemisphere
    Spring is nowhere near.

I might have mentioned before that I have a strong objection to the word ‘haiku’ being applied to anything written in other than Japanese. So my own chosen form is the ‘rhyming double non-haiku’ which I plan to bring to international prominence

    1. Mind you …. I have spent a lot of time in Japan and Asia generally over the years, and I do get a bit embarrassed by how we in the West misinterpret and then misappropriate Eastern culture and philosophy. So not taking it seriously sort of relieves that guilt.

    2. In my case, Australia is sort of Asia in a geopolitical sense, Indonesia being our close neighbour, and, as a multicultural country we have Australians who cultural origins come from all corners of the globe. So I like to think that we are open minded, though frequently we aren’t. Our Foreign Minister (a very important political position) is Penny Wong, a lesbian of Asian descent, and highly respected. Our favourite national cricketer (an even more important position!) is Usman Khawaja, an Islamic man, but about as Aussie as they come. My son’s cricket team, in fact, contains only a few white people, and a senior member is Japanese. During the winter here my son and he are going to Japan to play in the Japanese League and hopefully have him qualify for the Japanese National team.
Sorry. I’m boring you. I could go on and on ….

    3. Never boring and congratulations for your son and the upcoming trip. I forget how close you are in area. I think it’s interesting how cricket and baseball are similar. Diversity here in WY is rarely celebrated but as a family we do and diversity is one of the pros about my granddaughter’s high school. It’s difficult to change old thinking.

    4. My son won’t qualify for Japan – he’s not Japanese and just going for a laugh and to help his mate. A word of warning, though! To a purist (like me) comparing cricket to baseball is like comparing chess to snakes and ladders. Maybe Americans see it the other way around.

Diversity, in order to prosper, needs to overcome fear. Politicians, unfortunately, frequently see it as within their interests to foster fear.

    5. I apologize for your perceived slight in the comparison. I’ve seen scenes of shows where the contempt is real but I think there’s room for all sport lovers. Growing up in New England, baseball – Boston Red Sox or New York Yankees were the ones to cheer. I’ve never attended a cricket match but it does look like fun😀

    6. I was in Palm Springs a few years back and there was some massive lottery going on, maybe running into billions of dollars. I went into a shop to buy an apple and the guy tried to sell me a ticket, but I declined. “Do you realise,” he said, “that you could buy the New York Yankees with this money?”
I found it a weird sort of thing to say. Why the fuck would anyone want to buy the New York Yankees?
