That’s it.
Finally, she thought, I can get some help! She reached into her pocket and felt for coins to use the phone. Her blood soaked fingers slid into the cloth to feel nothing. I’ll just dial 911 she thought again, or was it 999 here? I’ll try both. Surely someone would answer. As her other hand tightened her grip on Joe’s collar, she was exhausted because hauling him from the accident had been grueling. A vacation trip that should have been pleasant countryside fun was now a nightmare. Joe tried to speak as blood was drying around his lips and words came out garbled. Something like “put me down” he tried to say. She would never leave him and even though she could see buildings a ways ahead, didn’t know if she could make it even to the phone booth. She sat down by him and wiped more blood from the gaping wound in his chest. Her entire clothing was now soaked from when she first tried to carry him from the car. Now she had to summon more strength and reach the red booth. She dialed 999 and it answered. “I need an ambulance, I think my husband may be dying! Yes, a car ran us off the road and he’s badly injured!”
