Joe never thought much about security, he only had a padlock on his storefront metal door, as there was not much crime in this part of town—everyone was older and kept to themselves, and no one had much of anything of value. He was fixing the padlock on the gate when headlights blinded him as a vehicle crept up close, not giving him room to move aside. A man jumped out of the high pickup, shoved a gun, Joe thought, into his neck, yelling “Open up!” and Joe did so. Joe dared not speak as he stood looking down to the pavement as ordered, and did not turn around as the man retrieved an item from Joe’s store and they sped off. When the police arrived asked Joe what happened, he told them, but couldn’t answer when they asked what was taken. Joe knew who and what it was, but he wasn’t talking.
