Page 173, Line 4 – Revenge is Never Sweet

“H is for Hawk” by Helen Macdonald

She left the room in typical “style, heel-bow, soaking up g-force like a” scorned woman out for revenge. And she was. This would be the last time George would betray her. After seeing him with that woman again, she was finally angry enough to see him for what he was, a philanderer.

Marie had known him only a short while before they actually were close. She observed him as most other women on campus, with the curious eye of temptation. She had heard the rumors, but when actually finding herself drawn to him, she set those aside.

Thinking this day how stupid that was, how naive she had been, she was almost more angry with herself than him. A brief encounter she could forgive, but watching them today, she knew her own relationship with him was done. Marie spent the next few hours maliciously contemplating exactly how she would exact her retaliation. Presumably George had no knowledge she had found him out, or maybe he didn’t care. Either way, he was going to pay.

Before this interlude, Marie had busied her off hours as a nurse’s aide at the local free clinic. It was there Marie found a devious solution. Some of these women were living dangerous lives and Marie preyed on one of them to accomplish her plan. Devising a meet between George and the woman was the easy part. Convincing the woman to complete the act required to infect an unknowing man, George, was the difficult part. Between listening to Marie’s story and a very large sum of compensation, the deal was set.
