Jimmy looked out again, raised his hand to feel cold wet condensation on the window. Slurring it to the side to see clearer, he wished to be outside with his friends. He thought of the neighborhood boys as friends, even though he never joined them. Today’s weather made him wish for what could not be for a boy bound inside.
Once in a while his mother would bake cookies and set up games to entertain his friends, after pleas to their mothers. It was her way of coping. Jimmy just wanted to feel snowflakes on his tongue like his friends.
So poignant and lovely. I could feel his yearning in my soul.
