MLMM Tale Weaver #172

She finally arrived, her legs tired from the walk. She had sneaked into this old building many times, but this was first time she had to lie to her mother. Laurie was an avid reader and many a book on these shelves had beckoned to her. She had started reading in the youth section, and exhausting those books, moved into poetry. She was a curious girl, and her thirst for knowledge was only satiable within these broken walls.

Today was difficult, defying her mother, sneaking to this place she loved. Her mother’s concern was legitimate, since the library was now dilapidated and closed to the public, it was dangerous for a young girl. Laurie was aware of strangers being dangerous, but had never seen anyone else inside the premises. She relished the idea of quiet seclusion and scent of old books. Some with worn leather bindings were her favorites and she would hold them to her chest in a loving gesture.

She decided to choose a book of poems to stuff in her coat, to read at home. She was about to leave when she heard a rustle of the papers scattered on the floor. Turning, she saw an older gentleman, roughly cloaked with long hair and unruly beard. He seemed as surprised as Laurie when they met. Strangely, Laurie was not afraid; there was something about the man that made her instantly comfortable in his presence.

Her mind seemed to realize the fact he had also sneaked into the library to read the treasures inside. She slowly stepped near him and he offered a few words, “I see you like to read also”. That is all he said and walked on by.

Laurie hoped she would meet the old one again, possibly they would talk of books, something her parents did not enjoy. Unbeknownst to Laurie she had met the person she had always wished to meet, the Librarian.

  1. There’s an old Twilight Zone episode called “Time Enough at Last” which first aired in 1959 that is about a man who loves to read but can never find the time because of his harsh boss and his nagging wife. Then, a nuclear war happens and everyone is wiped out except him. Now he thinks he’ll have time enough to read, but the twist at the end is that he breaks his glasses, and without them, all of his books are just a blur.

  2. Well done. I remember the first time I went to a library. My thought was, Wow, so much to read. I wondered if I could read them all before dying. It was like a kid in a candy store. I believe there is no greater gift to give to children than the ability to read and an understanding of the power of words. Just a lovely post.
