slightly slumped, casual presence
dressed for the opera, patient as he could manage
waiting was never his strong suit
smoking always filled a space
finally, sits up, then stands to embrace his paramour.

I think he may be slightly agitated that he was kept waiting so long. Had it not been for the chance to have a smoke, he would have been really on edge!
